Feeding well to stay fit: food as a key piece of your pet's well-being.

Nutrition is the foundation of your pet's well-being, and at BFM - Best Friends Milano you will have the opportunity to talk to the best animal nutritionists!

Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what your health is! It can be said that at the base of our per's well-being, food is the first fundamental building block.

For an animal, eating is at the base of the pyramid of well-being along with not contracting diseases, receiving treatment, not being mistreated, being able to exercise: in short, having all the elements to live healthily, with dignity and without deprivation!

WHEN AND HOW DID FOOD FOR YOUR PET ORIGINATE? - Industrial food was born in the mid-19th century with the first cookies prepared to feed hunting dogs after intense hours of outdoor work. In 1900 the first wet and dry food was made, and since 1970 it has been Fediaf that guarantees the safety of pet food worldwide; in Italy the reference is Assalco.

The meat used does not include hooves, stomach contents, blood, fur, skin, beaks. It can be: fresh, and be dried in production; dehydrated, with a faster drying process (a double process then compared to fresh); it can be in the form of meal, again it is already dried through a double process.

DRY, SEMI-DRY, MOIST AND... - Industrial food can be dry, semi-dry, wet. And again: complete, complementary, for different purposes; depending on its quality it is classified into premium, superpremium and ultrapremium.

Dry food, i.e., kibble, is made by mixing the ingredients homogeneously, and brought to a cooking temperature of up to 120-170°; it is said to be produced technically by extrusion. Once the amalgam is created, the dry food is then dried and subjected to fattening, to make it more palatable.

Dry food in the form of pellets, on the other hand, is produced by pressing raw materials on two perforated rollers up to 60°, without steam. In this case, animal meat meal, which has itself already undergone a drying process, is used as the raw materials.

Wet food contains up to 70-80% water and is starch-free. It can be in the form of room bites, made from ground raw materials and cooked; pate, with ground raw materials and brought to 50-85°. The semi-wet form of food has up to 20-30% water, and these are often complementary products, such as soft snacks, the classic "treats"!

THE LABEL - We always read the label carefully! We will find the name and description of the feed, the animal species for which it is intended, general composition, analytical components, additives, net content, manufacturer information, storage date and lot number. The obligation to label data is set by European Regulation 767/2009-2018.

Classification according to quality takes into account:

  • ingredients

  • nutrients

  • palatability and digestibility

  • packaging

  • control of raw materials

  • price

We will find the percentages of crude protein, crude fiber, crude fat, crude ash and moisture on the label. Learning to read the label is very important; it makes us aware of the product we are offering to our beloved animals.
